The Daily Habit That is Changing My Life

The Daily Habit That is Changing My Life

The last couple of weeks I’ve been trying out a new daily habit that is totally changing the way I view my day.

I learned it from The Creative Act by Rick Rubin, would highly recommend checking it out if you haven’t yet.

It’s an incredible book about how you can hone and improve your creativity.

Creativity stems from your awareness. Awareness of your life and your surroundings, and drawing inspiration from both of them.

One small exercise you can do to strengthen your awareness is at the end of every day open up a notebook and write down ONE story from the day. Just one. This shouldn’t take more than 10 minutes.

Deeply think about your day and find one event from it that is noteworthy. Write it down as a story in your notebook.

For instance yesterday I did a workout without my phone for the first time ever. I had literally the best workout of my life. I told the story about why I decided to do that and why it made the workout so much more impactful.

The day before that I wrote about when I met up with a friend for coffee and what we talked about.

This will be hard to do at first. Your awareness and storytelling skills are muscles you need to build. If you’re struggling at first, choose literally anything that happened in your day and just describe it. “I had a good morning and this is why:” “I had an excellent workout and this is why:” “I really enjoyed my morning and this is why:”

As you go along your awareness skills will strengthen and you’ll be able to turn stories out of everything that happens in your day.

This small habit has so many benefits:

  • Your storytelling skills improve. Storytelling is perhaps the most important skill in the world.

  • Your creativity increases. You improve being able to turn content out of your day to day life.

  • Your awareness increases. Throughout the day you’ll be looking for stories. You’ll be more aware of your emotions and surroundings.

  • You now have an incredible record of your life. Think of what will happen from 10 years straight of doing this habit. You’ll be able to look back and see on a day to day basis what was going on in your life at the time

  • It’s therapeutic. It helps you reflect on your day as your getting ready for bed which is proven to help you sleep better.

For me the best benefit has been the creativity part. By writing one story from every day I’ve been able to turn those stories into so many pieces of content.

There are an unbelievable amount of benefits for this 10-15 minute habit. It has totally changed the way I look at my day.

I’d highly recommend everyone try this! I’d try to avoid doing this on a computer. Hand writing will make it way more powerful.
